Why Vitamin C? Man is the only animal on the planet that does not synthesize his own Vitamin C and therefore must ingest enough to maintain good health. There are  four enzymes which convert glucose into ascorbic acid (vit C). Our bodies make the first three but the fourth cannot be made due to human gene damage. Therefore no ascorbic acid. Which means the body does not have naturally the centerpiece of antioxidant-antiradical defense. This is of course why there is so much discussion in this web site and all over the web about antioxidant nutrition supplements and foods.

Without this defense it is said all air breathing life on earth would disappear within a century.

We as humans are very poor  absorbers of Vitamin C. Many people get little or no Vitamin C in their bodies everyday. Many of us have less than 25 micrograms a day that is synthesized. Further, Vitamin C is not stored in the human body.  On top of that of course as a whole our society does not get a lot of Vitamin C in our diets. Very few of us eat raw fruit directly from trees, fresh vegetables from our garden or fresh raw meat, the best natural occurring sources of Vitamin C.

The main theme of this site is clogged blood vessels and the diseases like PAD and atherosclerosis. Statistics show that coronary heart disease is the big killer in our society.  Diseases  like heart attacks were virtually unknown in 1900. There is a very real connection between this disease and our new found processed/fast food diet. Stop America's #1 Killer!

Just before his death at 93 Linus Pauling and Matthias Rath had finished their study on the link between Vitamin C and atherosclerosis (clogged arteries). In short they concluded that chronic Vitamin C deficiency lead to a serious compromising of our arterial system. A study in Finland showed Vitamin C deficiency may be a risk factor in artery disease. Published in the Aceology Medical Review.

Almost all of us know that Vitamin C is an antioxidant. It is well advertised. Yet a large part of our society is low in this Vitamin. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) has been shown to be the most effective water soluble antioxidant in humans plasma.

Dr. Robert Cathcart states" that ascorbate is useful of the treatment of almost all diseases. The almost universal benefit is because massive doses of ascorbate neutralize massive amounts of free radicals mediate all inflammations. Most acute infectious diseases can be cured if the free radicals are eliminated."

So that leaves supplementation.

I recommend at least 2000 to 3000mg a day of either ascorbic acid or Ester C. Both a fairly inexpensive and can easily be gotten in stores or on the internet everywhere. For those of you who take or want to take as much as Linus Pauling recommended,6-18g C and 3-6 grams Lysine, I recommend powder. Powder is easier, has great absorption and is cheaper. If you are one of those who take mega doses of up to 14,000 when feeling fine and 1000mg per half hour when illness strikes then powder is the only way to fly and Ester C is the type.

Another Vitamin C Study
Two primary vitamins—E and C are still very important. Antioxidants and cognitive function. A study of 14,968 women (70–79 years of age) investigated their cognitive functions in relationship to their intake of antioxidant supplements. The women were categorized by the amounts of vitamin E and vitamin C supplements taken and the length of time on an antioxidant program. They were then given a brief telephone cognitive function test. Results: Long-term current users of vitamins E and C had significantly better scores than non-users. Benefits were less consistent for women taking vitamin E alone with a still smaller relationship to those on vitamin C alone. Researchers indicate that the greater effect of vitamin E over vitamin C may be that vitamin E is fat-soluble that is absorbed directly by tissue while vitamin C is water-soluble. They also point out that it is well established that vitamin E requires the presence of vitamin C for optimal metabolism. Am. J. Clin. Nutr. (2003). Vol. 77 pp. 975–84.
